The Power of "Showing Up"
"80% of Success is Just Showing Up" - Woody Allen
A Life and Business Philosophy That Actually Works
I used to think success came from strategy, timing, or talent. But lately, I’ve realized one of the most powerful drivers of progress is something far simpler: showing up
A good friend gave me this quote a few weeks ago and I've been trying to do this better in my professional and personal life since then.
To me, Showing Up means:
1. Say Yes!
Take that meeting with a new vendor.
Sit in on that AI course that showed up in your LinkedIn feed this week.
Go on Date Night at least once a week.
2. Get Started!
"You don't have to be great to start, but you do have to start to be great" - Zig Ziglar
Don't be afraid to reach out to an old friend who just got a new job.
Don't wait until you have time to go to the gym, schedule it regularly in your calendar.
3. Be Present!
Put your phone away during meetings and family dinners.
Be where your feet are—soak in the views, not your phone (the cover image is me in Moab last weekend).
Ask genuine questions that show you're invested in the conversation.
4. Embrace Discomfort!
Attend that networking event even when you don't know anyone.
Share your half-formed ideas in brainstorming sessions.
Volunteer for the presentation that makes your palms sweat.
5. Keep Going!
Success is rarely a straight line – consistency over perfection.
The most meaningful professional relationships often develop after multiple interactions.
Those "overnight successes" you admire? They showed up daily for years.
I've found that "just showing up" has opened more doors than any carefully crafted strategy ever could. Earlier this month, I attended an industry conference where I knew almost no one. Three conversations and one coffee meeting later, I'm now collaborating on a project that’s shaping my new business.
You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to be there.
